You can start 6 weeks early in pots but we find they do best if direct sown in the garden in the spring after your last frost.  In the spring work your garden soil 6 deep and scatter seeds lightly (one packet will cover around 30 square feet) and cover lightly with peat or compost, sowing cosmos seeds too deep hinders germination.   Once your plants are 8 tall Cosmos will produce more flowers if you pinch, or cut, the top 3 of the plant off (just above a leaf set).
